Data from "LIGHT ENGINES- LIGHT TRAINS", Civil Engineer and Architect's Journal (Vol 11, 1848), p. 223.
This was an inspection carriage that Locobase couldn't resist including in the database. Mr. Samuel, "engineer" of the EC Railway, noted that this single-car motor was designed to carry him and other inspectors. As the specifications show, this was a small vehicle, only 12 1/2 feet long and capable of carrying 7 passengers. "The engine", reported Samuel, "is fitted complete, with link-motion, feed-pumps, &c." The tiny cylinders turned a crank axle that drove the front axle of the two.
Samdel claimed that this little scooter would hit 30 mph with 7 on board and at times reached 44 mph.
Pleased with this engine, which he noted dispensed with the need to make up a special train for inspections, Samdel applied the steam motor principle as an alternative to branch line operation of regular locomotive-and-carriage sets. See Locobase 9646.
