Class Steam motor (Locobase 12313)

Data from "Latest Rail Motor Coaches", The Locomotive Magazine, (15 March 1905), p. 47; and "Steam Railway Motor Cars with Detachable Engines", Engineering News, Volume LIII [53], No 18 (4 May 1905), p. 463. See also T Hurry Riches and Sidney B Haslam, "Steam Motor-Car Traffic", Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, 1906, Parts 3-4 (October 1906), pp. 660-661, 675.

According to the LM article, these 46-passenger carriages were introduced in the Stoke-on-Trent district to compete with the burgeoning electric tramway service. They were to stop to pick up riders at level crossings, bridges and the like to drop workers off at any one of the several collieries between Silverdale and Trentham.
