According to the LM article, these 46-passenger carriages were introduced in the Stoke-on-Trent district to compete with the burgeoning electric tramway service. They were to stop to pick up riders at level crossings, bridges and the like to drop workers off at any one of the several collieries between Silverdale and Trentham.
