One of the last engines to be built with Joy valve gear, these little tanks served as dock shunters in ports like Hull. According to Richard Drew of the Great Central Railway site ([
]), the first examples of this design were delivered in 1888 (with 16 more following in the next 9 years). A look at Drew's photo suggests that little about the design changed over the next 45 years.
