Class 4 (Locobase 4918)

This was one of the standard Kerr Stuart designs for industrial locomotives suitable for light rail (18-25 lb per yard) and for any gauge between 2' and standard. This particular locomotive moved to the Talyllyn Railway in 1951, also in western Wales, three years after the Corris closed, was overhauled by Hunslet, and entered service in 1952. On the Talyllyn, the engine, #4, was named Edward Thomas in honor of a former manager.

The [link] website notes that this engine was the first in the British Isles to use the Giesel multi-blast-tube ejector in place of a conventional stack. She operated with a Giesel from 1958 to 1969, but the railway found little difference in coal consumption.. Many regard the Hackworth gear as too simple to allow good valve settings.

These were the first engines on the narrow-gauge CR, which ran a primarily tourist operation from the junction with the Cambrian at Machynlleth to the Aberilefenny 11 miles away. The trio were delivered as 0-4-0ST, but later fitted with a trailing axle to smooth the ride. At the height of the tourist season, it was common to see double-headed power working the trains.

Corris Railway operated the Talyllyn until 1948, when it closed. This engine came over 4 years later and was dubbed "Sir Haydn" after Sir Henry Haydn Jones, recently deceased owner of the line. Defective in firebox, it was hardly used and officially laid up in 1957. Repairs ending in 1968 restored it to service.
