Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class Brackley (Locobase 16019)

Data from "Six-Coupled Tank Locomotive for the Earl of Ellesmere" . , The Locomotive, Volume 16 (15 October 1910), pp. 219-220. See also Alan Davies, Locomotives of the Lancashire Central Coalfield: The Walkden Yard Connection : Amberley Publishing Limited, 2014), pp. . Works numbers were 912 in 1910 and 976 in 1912.

These powerful six-coupled colliery locomotives wore their saddle tanks over the entire length of their boilers. Only the safety valve stand and the capped stack broke the line that began at the cab front. In addition to the Brackley, Nasmyth Wilson delivered the Ellesmere to the Bridgewater Colliery in 1912. This engine was named for Francis Charles Granville Egerton, 3rd Earl of Ellesmere.

Davies summarizes the Brackley's various shop visits during its long career. In 1922, the shops mounted a new boiler. He reports that Brackley worked "mainly ...between Walkden Yard and Sandhole (Bridgewater) Colliery.

After more than 50 years of work, Brackley was retired in April 1956 and scrapped in February 1957 by Stone & Hutchison. Ellesmere left service sometime after mid-1954, was partially scrapped by September 1956, with the chassis finally struck in November 1963.
