Class Northolt (Locobase 20606)

Data from "The Freshwater, Yarmouth & Newport Railway", The Locomotive Magazine, Volume XXIV (14 September 1918), p. 152-153. See also D Cole, "Contractor's Locomotives in the Isle of Wight", Industrial Railway Record, No 12 (December 1966), pp. 298-299. Works number was 1555 in 1902.

Manning Wardle's standard saddle tank design appeared on a number of contractor's projects including Pauling & Elliot's Northolt Junction-High Wycombe work for the Great Central-Great Western Joint Railway.

Meanwhile, railway construction on the Isle of Wight in the English Channel included the building the Isle of Wight Railway between Ryde and Ventnor between 1860-1866. In 1880-1888, the Freshwater, Yarmouth & Newport Railway was built from the Newport junction with the IofW Railway in the north-central part of the island. It ran west to Yarmouth harbor and on to Freshwater, which lay 11 1/2 miles (18.5 km) from Newport. For years, the FNY used IofW Railway locomotives.

In 1913, steadily deteriorating relations with the IofW led the FYN to buy two of its own locomotives including the former Northolt, which it renumbered 1 and named "Medina" in recognition of its shunting responsibilities at Medina Wharf. It also headed goods trains.

After almost ten years with the SR, Medina was retired in June 1932.
