Class 20 (Locobase 10597)

Data from "New 0-8-0 Mineral Locomotive", Railway and Locomotive Engineering, Volume 20, No 7 (July 1907), p. 335. See also "A55 Class 0-10-0WT 1903; 0-8-0 1906" under the menu selection for James Holden in the Great Eastern Railway Society's website at [link]

When the Decapod (Locobase 3247) proved too heavy, just too much engine for the service for which Holden had built, it was "rebuilt" at Stratford with only two cylinders. The resulting eight-coupled tender engine had a bizarrely long wheelbase, mitigated, says the LM report, by fitting radial axle boxes on both end axles. Indeed, the layout looked closer to that of an 0-4-4-0 than a typical eight-coupled with closely space axles. The Belpaire firebox remained part of the equipage, but the boiler's length shrank as did its tube count.

So modified as the GER's only 0-8-0 ever, the 20 ran for a few more years, but was scrapped in December 2013 because "its boiler needed heavy repair", according to the GER Society.
