Class 26 (Locobase 2315)

See Ahrons (1927); "Ten--Wheel Radial Tank Engine: Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway", Railway Engineer. Volume 25, No 4 (April 1904), p. 125 and No 6 (June 1904). pp. 194-196; and Fowler's Illustrated Locomotive Dictionary (1906) for data. HA Hoy design. See also steamindex's summary at [link], last accessed 12 September 2015.

According to Metcalf (Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway Locomotives, [link]), this was Harry Hoy's only original design and it was a failure. They were designed to take corrugated fireboxes, but were delivered with Belpaire fireboxes. They had a water-scoop assembly that allowed the engine to take water on the run.

The RE report zoomed in on the underhung plate springs mounted under all drivers. It commented on the impriovement they represented over the "curious double elliptical springs with which [previous CME for the L&Y] Mr Aspinall fitted his engines." Among other complaints, the former design "often dropped out, and eventually caused the disastrous accident at Waterloo on the line recently equipped for electric traction."

Quoting Marshall, steamindex noted that the class was intended for the Manchester to Oldham and Rochdale to Bacup services.
