Eastern Counties / Norfolk Railway 4-2-0 Locomotives in Great_Britain

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 13 (Locobase 10437)

Data from "The Locomotives of the Great Eastern Railway," The Locomotive Magazine, Vol X (15 February 1904), p. 21. Boiler pressure is an estimate.

Of classic and even then old-fashioned appearance, this trio had the hemispherical fireboxes, straight boiler, single driving axle just ahead of the firebox and driven by outside cylinders. Less common even then was the separation between carrying axles, the two being divided by the cylinders.

The last of these (44) lasted until July 1868.

Class 88 (Locobase 10284)

Data from "The Locomotives of the GER," The Locomotive Magazine, Vol VIII (7 Mar 1903), p. 160. Boiler pressure is an estimate.

According to the account in the Locomotive Magazine, locomotive superintendent John Hunter seems not to have designed locomotives as to have bought from a variety of builders "...that particular type of engine which was their specialty at the time." So it was with Jones & Potts and these single wheelers. Haystack-firebox at the rear, behind the tall driver, balanced the tall stack. The leading axle rolled just behind the smokebox, the other carrying axle was placed just ahead of the driver set.

Following locomotives 91-97 dispensed with the haystack in favor of a raised firebox and dome placed well forward. They had a longer wheelbase (12 ft 4 in) and weighed in at 51,044 lb. 94 and 97 later received trailing axles (4-2-2) which further lengthened the wheelbase.

Class 98 (Locobase 10299)

Data from "The Locomotives of the GER," The Locomotive Magazine, Vol VIII (4 April 1903), p. 228. Boiler pressure is an estimate.

Before the weakness of the single driver placed well back became clear, the ECR bought 5 more such locomotives (works numbers 560-564) with taller drivers. They were soon modified as 2-2-2 engines by deleting the second carrying axle, moving the driving axle still closer to the leading axle, and fitting a trailing axle under the footboard. The alteration was success and the class ran for almost 20 years.
