Class 1 (Locobase 6475)

Data from [link] (accessed 8 April 2005). This was the Wirral's only 4-4-2 tank. It had a long wheelbase and apparently plenty of adhesion. A review of the SH&D's 0-4-4Ts (Locobase 6477) suggest that this was a one-off to examine the relative merits of a leading axle; its boiler was smaller. Still #1 lasted on the railway until grouping.

Writing in Railway Magazine in 1954, W A Tuplin, the noted locomotive observer who grew up along the Wirral, summarized his view of the 1: "[It] seemed to me rather a weak oddity ..."
