J Manson's design with outside cylinders, Belpaire firebox, and a surprisingly generous (for a British engine) superheater ratio. G&SWR introduced no other Ten-wheeler locomotives nor did they use a Belpaire firebox in any other engines.
129, the second of the pair, came with a Weir feed water heater.. Apparently it wasn't deemed useful enough and was removed in 1919. LMS took them into the grouped system, and numbered them accordingly.
One left the railway in 1933, the other in 1934.
Data from Fowler, Illustrated Locomotive Dictionary (1906) and "Ten-wheeled Express Locomotive, Glasgow & South Western Railway", The Locomotive, Vol IX (4 July 1903), p 1. "Ten-wheeled Express Locomotive, Glasgow & South Western Railway", Volume 76 (25 September 1903), pp. 421-422. Works numbers were 15734-15743.
These were designed by James Manson and represented the first Ten-wheeler passenger engines on the G & SW. They had Belpaire fireboxes, steam reversers and were specially designed, according to the author of the LM article, "...to cope with the fast and increasingly heavy expresses running between Glasgow and Carlisle." These were operated in conjunction with the Midland's expresses coming up from St Pancras. A 15-mile (24.15 km) climb from Hollywood to beyond Thornhill average one in 175 (0.57%) was regarded by Engineering as "the most trying". Another 5-mile section between Barrhead and Caldwell covered only a third of that distance, but its average grade was 1 in 80 (1.25%).
