Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class Ia ( Iota-alpha) (Locobase 1517)

Data from Railway Age Gazette, Volume 59, No 22 (26 November 1915), p. 1013 and "Interesting Variety of Types of Locomotives for the Greek, Serbian, Belgian and Russian Governments", Railway and Locomotive Engineering, Volume , No 10 (December 1915), p. 406-407 . See also "Mikado Type Locomotives for the Greek Government Rys.", Locomotive Magazine, Volume XXII [22] (15 March 1915), p. 43. Works numbers were 55063-55082 in 1915.

Firebox heating surface area included 16 sq ft (1.49 sq m).n

The RAG's author noted that this design was first tested on a 43-km (27.7-mile) stretch of track that had ruling grades of 2%. Alco's guarantee included an ability to haul 250 metric tons up the 2% grade at 25 km/hr (15 mph) and 60 km/hr (34 mph) on the level and 190 metric tons at 40 km/hr (25 mph) over the 2% grade and 80 km/h (50 mph) on the level.
