Bought to serve the newly building National Railway of Haiti, these moderately scaled Ten-wheelers traversed the 142-km (88-statute-mile) main line between Port-au-Prince north to St Marc, then up the Artibonite River valley to Hinche, on to the port of Cape Haitien on the north coast and ultimately to Bahon.
The system was built by J P MacDonald under a contract (La contrat de la Honte) that included the right to develop banana plantations in a strip 20 km (6 miles) to either side of the right of way and which provided for little if any compensation to the Haitian government for 50 years. The agreement prompted protests by both the German community within Haiti and the Cacos rebels who undertook a rebellion against US influence in 1911. Unrest would lead in 1915 to periodic occupation by US forces for nearly 2 decades.
