Data from E L Ahrons, The British Steam Locomotive from 1825 to 1925 (London: Ian Allan, 1926).
This large narrow-gauge system grew to a total length of 1,121 miles (1,805 km) by 1900. The main line running from Madras to Tuticorin covered 446 miles (718 km). It developed from an 1 July 1874 amalgamation of two earlier British-owned lines: the Great Southern of India, built in the 5' 6" broad gauge from Negapatam to Erode and completed in 1867 and the South Indian Tramway, a metre-gauge tramway that was opened in 1865 and soon renamed the Carnatic Railway.
