East Indian 2-6-2 Locomotives in India

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class IGR/WV (Locobase 20930)

Data from "WV Class Passenger Tank Engine for the (ISR) East Indian Railway", Vulcan Foundry Locomotive Catalogue, No. 68, found on Flicker's Historical Locomotive Images website at [link]. (Many thanks to Jorge Cerezo Toledo for his 26 June 2021 email containing links to several sites including the Vulcan Catalogue referred to above.) Works numbers were 4787-4790 in 1942.

This quartet of suburban tanks was intended to serve East Indian's large network of commuter lines. It's likely that the ISR and Vulcan Foundry realized even before these were completed that the bunker capacity would be too small. So the builder quickly set work turning out ten 2-6-4T WM class (Locobase 4289), which reproduced the WV design with larger bunkers carried by a bogie truck rather than the single trailing axle in the WVs.

Soon after their arrival, this batch was converted to WMs.
