Great Indian Peninsula 2-6-2 Locomotives in India

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class P1 (Locobase 20322)

Data from "Tank Locomotive for Suburban Traffic, Great Indian Peninsula Railway", Locomotive Magazine, Volume XX [20], No 267 (15 November 1914). (Many thanks to Abhijit Gore for his 30 December 2020 email supplying the class ID, road numbers, and corrected set of works numbers.) Works numbers were 2991-3002 in 1914.

Except for the wider track of the wheels needed for the 9 1/2" (241 mm) wider gauge, the set of tank engines that arrived on the GIPR in 1914 would have looked at home on any British railway. A low-set cab, long tanks, Belpaire firebox all bear witness to their roots. The outside Walschaerts valve gear acuated piston valves.

The class hauled suburban trains in the Mumbai (formerly Bombay) area.
