East Indian 4-6-0 Locomotives in India

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class unknown (Locobase 6384)

See the ca. 1920 Vulcan Foundry Catalogue hosted on [link] . Www.enuii.org/vulcan_list_15.tif shows that the works numbers were 2358-2376. See also "Express Locomotive, East Indian Railway," The Locomotive Magazine, Vol XII (15 June 1906), p. 93; and "New Locomotive Equipment; East Indian Railway", Railroad Gazette, Volume XLVI [46], No 8 (19 February 1909), pp. 368-369.

These Ten-wheelers immediately followed the Atlantics produced by VF to the same specifications (see Locobase 2682). The LM report credits this design to Messrs. Sir A M Rendel & Robertson. It's not clear from the sketch and photograph if the boiler was mated to a Belpaire firebox. Both Vulcan (as shown above) and North British supplied engines in this class.

Data from "New Express Locomotives for the East Indian Railway", Railway Engineer, Volume 46, No 3 (March 1925), pp. 91-93. Works numbers were 3741-3780 in 1924.

Although based on earlier Vulcan Ten-wheelers, this large batch of Ten-wheelers retained the Belpaire firebox but featured modifications to the cylinders and the motion and improvements to the smokebox. But the "chief object" was to achieve "as free an exhaust as possible" through avoidance of sharp bends, establishing as direct a passage layout as possible, "with regard to the relative areas of the steam ports and cylinders." Piston valves measured 10 1/2" (267 mm) in diameter.

Likewise, within the cylinders offered "ample area" and were "free from tortuous bends." Enroute to the blast pipe, the cylinders' exhaust paths followed a constant taper "from cylinder to blast pipe top."
