Staatsspoorwegen 4-4-0 Locomotives in Indonesia

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class B53 (Locobase 4721)

Data from [link]; and E Lassueur, "Recent Locomotives for the Dutch Indies Railways," Locomotive Magazine, Volume XXVIII [28] (14 October 1922), pp. 299-302.

See Indra Krishnamurti at [link] for building dates and numbers both of predecessor railways and the Indonesian State Railways. Hartmann delivered 7, Werkspoor 2.

Lassueur explained that the thirty-five two-cylinder compound Eight-wheelers procured from Hannover (29) and Saxon of Chemnitz (6) had served the railways well, reaching 80 kph (50 mph) and developing 500 hp. To meet increasing demand, however, the railways turned to a superheated, simple-expansion variant that used piston valves to admit steam to the cylinders.
