Great Southern & Western 0-4-2 Locomotives in Ireland

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 101 (Locobase 10081)

A Bury design with the haystack firebox, this locomotive was one of the first of the largest railway in Ireland. According to "Ireland's Railway Systems" (reproduced on Mike's Railway History website [link]), "This locomotive covered 487,919 miles in a quarter of a century of service, being withdrawn from service in January, 1874."

The photograph does indeed show a typical Bury design with the driving axle forward of the firebox, the haystack dome over the firebox, a horsecollar smokebox, tall stack, and spindly wheels.
