Waterford, Limerick, & Western 0-4-4 Locomotives in Ireland

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 51/294/E2 (Locobase 20249)

Data from "Locomotives for the Waterford, Limerick and Western Railway", Engineer, Volume 84 (13 August 1897), p 154.

Engineer reported that this class was of the "Castle Hacket type", which bore that name and Brian Born . The article said that "all details as far as is practicable and necessary should be made duplicates of one another." The two Robinson tanks described here and in Locobase 20250 shared "boilers and mountings, wheels, axles, axle boxes for coupled and bogie wheels, springs and gear for coupled wheels, all the working gear, [and] valve motion."

Locomotive superintendent John G Robinson saw this pair as tools to handle the traffic between Limerick, Ennis, and Tuan over a number of "fairly sharp" curves. Their coal consumption averaged 18 lb/mile (5.07 kg/km).

In January 1901, the Great Southern & Western acquired both the WL&W and the Waterford & Central Ireland.
