Sligo, Leitrim & Northern Counties 0-6-2 Locomotives in Ireland

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class Pioneer (Locobase 10318)

Data from "The Sligo, Leitrim, and Northern Counties Ry," The Locomotive Magazine, Vol VIII (9 May 1903), pp. 335. Works numbers were 1197-1198.

This was the first pair of new locomotives for the S L & NC, which opened its first section in 1879. The wheel arrangement attracted some comment by the LM's author. A photo shows that the trailling axle was both a good distance behind the last coupled axle (to support the firebox) and held wheels that seemed almost the same diameter as the drivers. Also, the connecting rod was quite long because it drove on the 3 coupled axle, a rare layout.
