Data from "The First Locomotive Built in Ireland", The Locomotive Magazine, (15 August 1904), p.136.
Not until 1845 did someone try to build a locomotive in Ireland - this was the first. Designers Greendon and Mackay crafted an engine with an enormous dome well forward, just behind the stack. A high running board cleared both auxiliary wheels and provided only a slender slice of slotted splasher on the drivers. Naturally the footboard was utterly unprotected.
