Class S2 (Locobase 9546)

Locobase 2688 describes the original 2-4-2T Worsdell/Von Borries cross-compound S class as it went into service on the Ballymena & Northern Counties in 1892. It's not clear why the railway chose to modify one of the six, but an expiring boiler may have prompted the decision. A G6S boiler normally used on a standard-gauge frame ws fitted, which promoted a significant reworking of the frame and the addition of a rear coal bunker.

Alas, the conversion was a flop. The new running gear layout induced derailments and the locomotive drivers slipped frequently because of the low percentage of total engine weight devoted to adhesion. After amassing only 3,000 miles in 1934, 110 was essentially retired except for brief intervals during World War II.
