Ballymena & Larne 2-6-0 Locomotives in Ireland

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class R (Bruiser) (Locobase 10226)

Data from "Narrow-Gauge Locomotives of the Belfast and Northern Counties RY," The Locomotive Magazine, Vol VII (May 1902), p. 92. Works number was 1947.

A rare bird in being a 2-6-0 saddle tank layout, this engine's nickname suggests the welcome augmentation in power its larger boiler, cylinders, and grate represented to the B & L. Like the other B & L locomotives, 5 passed to the Belfast & Northern Counties when that railway took over in 1889. Renumbered twice, the doughty little tank carried on until 1934. By the time it was scrapped in that year, Bruiser had racked up over 900,000 miles traveled in service - on a narrow-gauge line barely 10 miles long.
