According to the RPSI, this design was based on LMS's Stanier 2-6-4T, but was more "Fowler-esque" in that they used parallel boilers rather than Stanier's coned vessels. In service, the class demonstrated its aptness for the job by wheeling its Belfast-Londonderry trains at speeds up to 80 mph and covering the 95 miles without stopping for water. Also, they were comfortable bi-directional runners and could be turned around in 10 minutes.
They were big and powerful and served the GNR (I) and later the Coras Iompair Eireann (CIE) and the UTA (Ulster Transportation Authority) into the 1970s.
