Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 1053 (Locobase 20675)

Data from Ferrovie Dell' Alta Italia, Album Delle Locomotive (Torino, 1o Luglio 1876), T58bis.

The original design of the 20 "tipo primitivos" shown in Locobase 20673 called for modifications. Locobase 20674 shows the four reworked as 0-6-0STs. Another four apparently focused on increasing water and fuel capacity; ; two were Cockerill engines, two had come from the Robert Stephenson & Company works. The Officina Torino removed the saddle tank and attached a separate tender carrying more coal and water.

The Rete Mediterraneo (RM) kept two when the new network was established in 1885. One was given a Ferro dello Stato (FS) number in 1905.

Locobase found an inconsistencies between the given values for the tube diameters, tube lengths, and for the evaporative heating surface area given as 59.0 sq m. The EHS value shown in Locobase's specs is composed of the firebox heating surface area given in the diagram and the tube heating surface area calculated from the stated tube length, external tube diameter, and count.

Class 45 (Locobase 20673)

Data from Ferrovie Dell' Alta Italia, Album Delle Locomotive (Torino, 1o Luglio 1876), T58. Robert Stephenson & Company supplied ten, Cockerill ten. Stephenson engines took road numbers 39-44 and 76-79; works numbers were 873-878 in 1853 and 977-980 in 1855. Cockerill road numbers were 45-50 and 90-93; works numbers were 324-329 in 1853 and 401-404 in 1855.

Described as "tipo primotivo" in the Album, this class apparently carried its water tank under the boiler to make room for the outside springing on the widely set axles. Locobase doesn't have information to determine this class's service, but their small drivers suggest shunting (switching) work or possibly construction support.

All were renumbered by the Societe Ferrovie dell'Alta Italia (SFAI) in 1865. Four were converted to switchers with separate tenders (see Locobase ); the saddle tank was removed. Four more were given a third coupled axle, but retained the saddle tank (see Locobase 20674). The remaining twelve, which were scrapped in 1872-1875, were 1051-1052, 1054-1056, 1058-1560, and 1062-1065.
