Salentine / FSE / Sussidiate / FSE 0-6-0 Locomotives in Italy

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 1 (Locobase 6186)

Data from [link] (30 June 2004). This website, celebrating the Ferrovie del Sud-Est, explains that the amalgamation of southern Italian railways into the FSE occurred in 1932 (the law of 25 April). Three principal systems -- Salentine (much the biggest at 276,709 km), Sussidiate (114,738 km), and Strato (82,409 km)-- were brought together.

Sussidiate bought this class over a long stretch of time: 1-5 were delivered in 1889, 6-10 in 1901, with 12 finishing the class in 1905.

While one (#1) was scrapped before World War II and one left the rolls in 1940 (war damage?), the others survived into the post-war era. #5 went in March 1947 and 3-4 in April. The rest carried on into the 1960s, 3 -- 7 (October), 8 & 9 (November) -- being scrapped in 1960, and 10 in March 1972. #6 is preserved as a monument in Bari.

Class 311 (Locobase 6189)

Data from [link] (30 June 2004). This website celebrates the Ferrovie de Sud-Est; see Locobase 6186.

If Locobase is translating the website's Italian correctly, two of the Salentine's locomotives had been sent to other lines before the railway became part of the FSE. The Massa-Follonica got the class leader in 1915 while another railway received the 315 in 1923.

312 went to the SATTI (railways of the Canavese) in 1960 in exchange for another locomotive while the 316 was sold to Emilio Astengo di Savona.

Class 400 (Locobase 6190)

Data from [link] (30 June 2004). This website celebrates the Ferrovie de Sud-Est; see Locobase 6186.

The missing data (superheater surface) and difficult-to-interpret numbers (the diameters for the tubes and flues) obscure the view of this class. It's also difficult to tell exactly who built the class and when. But all of them remained in service on the FSE until the end of steam in 1972.
