Rete Mediterraneo 2-2-2 Locomotives in Italy

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 524 (Locobase 10732)

Data from E L Ahrons, M I Mech. E, "Early English Express Engines in Italy", The Locomotive Magazine, Vol XV (15 September 1909), p. 174.

When made over by the SFAI, the Sharp, Stewarts that had started out in Sardinia (Locobase 10730) were given Belpaire fireboxes with greater area than the earlier design but fewer boiler tubes. They retained the oddly dimensioned auxiliary wheels.

Two remained in service in 1908 on the FS.

NB: Tube length was derived from subtracting the given direct heating surface area from the total for the tube area and calculating the tube length required for that area when given the tube count and exterior diameter.
