Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 187/119/193/459/2103/241/1391 (Locobase 20630)

Data from Ferrovie Dell' Alta Italia, Album Delle Locomotive (Torino, 1o Luglio 1876), T39. (For roster details, see Josef Pospichal's lokstatistic website at [link], last accessed 14 August 2019.) Works numbers were 790-793 and 830-835 in 1863, 848-851 in 1964.

This class essentially duplicated the earlier Koechlin locomotives described in Locobase 20629 with only a slight reduction in boiler tubes. By 1876, the entire class had boilers with thicker plates and boiler pressure reset to 8 bar (116 psi). In 1885,eight of the class survived to join the Rete Mediterraneo. Formation of the Ferro dello Stato roster in 1905 included five of the original fourteen.

The Album data show the fireside evaporative heating surface area- 98 sq m--which was approximately 15% too low when compared to the sum of firebox heating surface area and the calculated tube heating surface area including the tubes' external (water side) diameter.. Locobase's specifications adjust the EHS to reflect the higher value.

Data from Ferrovie Dell' Alta Italia, Album Delle Locomotive (Torino, 1o Luglio 1876), T40. (For roster details, see Josef Pospichal's lokstatistic website at [link], last accessed 14 August 2019.) Works numbers were 790-793 and 830-835 in 1863, 848-851 in 1964.
