Vittorio Emanuele 2-4-0 Locomotives in Italy

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 61/137/279/161 (Locobase 20613)

Data from Ferrovie Dell' Alta Italia, Album Delle Locomotive (Torino, 1o Luglio 1876), T26.

Gouin's 1862 passenger locomotives joined other French-built locomotives in rolling on relatively tall drivers. Like most northern Italian locomotives, the trio was taken into the Alta Italia (SFAI) in 1865. Unlike most of them, which went onto the Rete Mediterraneo (RM), the engines were absorbed by the Rete Adriatico (RA) in 1885.

Locobase found an inconsistencies between the given values for the tube diameters, tube lengths, and for the evaporative heating surface area given as 85.2 sq m. The EHS value shown in Locobase's specs is composed of the firebox heating surface area given in the diagram and the tube heating surface area calculated from the stated tube length, external tube diameter, and count.

Also, the stroke length given in table is the diameter of the drivers. Locobase estimates the stroke based on other small Italian passenger locomotives.
