Data from Titre Exposition universelle internationale de 1889 a Paris. Rapports du jury internationale. Auteur - Volume France. Ministere du Commerce, de l'industrie. Picard, Alfred, ed. Volume Groupe VI - -Outillage et precedes des industries mecaniques. Electricite (5e partie) Classes 60 a 63. Cesare Frescot of the Mediterraneo designed these engines to pull a 160-ton train on the level at 50 mph or a 120-ton train up a 1% grade at 31 mph. Visually, his design had some unusual features, such as the Stephenson motion eccentrics mounted outside, an outwardly angled valve chest on each outside cylinder (obviously a generous loading gauge here), and a cylindrical steam "dome" with safety valve and a huge builder's plaque mounted on its sides. "It can be said, "says Reder (1974), "that the 'Giovanna d'Arco' [later Grupo 560 on the Italian State Railroads] brought the 4-4-0 locomotive on the European continent to full maturity."
