West India Improvement Company 2-4-4 Locomotives in Jamaica

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 18 (Locobase 20719)

Data from P C Dewhurst, "The Jamaica Government Railway and its Locomotives", Locomotive Magazine, Volume 25 (15 August 1919), p. 133. Works number was 2859 in 1893.

Dewhurst's commentary on Jamaican locomotives wonders about this purchase: "It was too light for useful work on the hill sections and as the level sections of the line were fully provided for by the English-built Nos 1-12, it is not easy to understand why the engine was obtained."

The engine was erected at Montego Bay, a rare departure from the usual Kingston-shed option at the opposite end of the island. It bore a resemblance to the Ocean State builder's various Forney urban passenger design.

After 20 years in service, the 18 was retired in September 1913.
