Class 22/92/4030 (Locobase 21178)

Data from DeGolyer, Volume 19, p. 214; and "JGR Class 4030" on Locomotive Fandom at [], last accessed 26 March 2024. . Works numbers were 14250 in March 1895, 14251-14252 in April.

Like many of Baldwin's export locomotives for Japan, this trio's order was brokered by Frazar & Company. One of the ships sank in shallow water. Salvage recovered all the parts of the locomotive and put it in service.

Wikipedia reports that the class was " used to haul coal trains, but performance of the locomotives was noted to have been poor. " Perhaps in a related response to the class's mediocrity, the Kyushu fitted an auxiliary tender to the engines. Baldwin's specs included a long paragraph of "Hereafter" comments.

By 1897, the Kyushu Railway acquired the Chikuho and the class ID changed to 92. In 1909, the Japanese Government Railway created class ID 4030 for the engines. They went of the roster by 1923.
