Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University Volume 23, .p 135. See also Consul-General Gowey, "Length of Railways in Japan as of July 31", letter of 24 August 1898, in Consular Reports - December 1898, Volume LVIII, No. 219, US House of Representatives, 55th Congress, 2nd Session, Doc. No. 565, Part 4 (Washington, DC: GPO, 1898), p. 565. Works numbers were 18297-18300 in October 1900.
This quartet of Moguls were among the largest of that wheel arrangement to operate in Japan. Chugoku Railway was authorized to build 98.13 miles (158 km) of line. As of 31 July 1898, no miles had been completed.
The #5 was soon sold to the Sanyo Railway and renumbered 46, a number it retained when nationalized with the others in 1906. Connelly reports that the 8360-8362 were retired in 1947-1948.
