Unspecified 2-8-2 Locomotives in Japan

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class Superheated, wood-burning (Locobase 20949)

Data from Nippon Sharyo Seizo Kaisha, Ltd. , Steam Locomotives Electric Locomotives catalogue (n.d.), p. 5.

The catalogue entry showing this design was drafted in the mid-1950s. An accompanying illustration shows neither railway information nor road numbers. It depicts a wood-burning locomotive with piston valves and a superheater. The tender was laid out expressly to carry wood and had racks for the fuel filling the tender body.

Conversions from metric to "English" measurement systems that yield almost exact equivalents in the latter, a center coupler and "cowcatcher" style pilot ahead of the smokebox , suggest that the locomotives were intended, perhaps, for British possessions in South and Southeast Asia.

(The tube heating surface area given in the specifications was 122.4 sq m (1,448 sq ft ), which represents the tubes' and flues' interior (fire side) diameters. In the same specs, tube and flue diameters are measured at the outside (water side). Locobase adopts the larger diameters as they allow more direct comparisons of various ratios with Anglo-American locomotive practice.)
