Class 53/5900 (Locobase 12229)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University Volume 20, p. 248. Works numbers were 15166-15171, 15389-15400 in July 1897; 19073-19082 in May 1901.

Sanyo Railways' service extended across Honshu from Kobe in the east to Hiroshima in the west. Its passenger trains presented the best of accommodations including Pullman sleepers and dining car and rapid service. The Baldwins acquired to pull these trains had the tallest drivers of any Japanese locomotive up to that time, the equivalent in driver diameter to gauge ratio of 80" (2,050 mm) drivers on the standard gauge.

The relatively low caloric value of "Japanese bituminous coal" probably prompted the note in the specs to drop the firebox "as much as possible in front". It was only 28" (711 mm) wide. Another boiler feature was the requirement to arrange the tubes in vertical rows (i.e. o o o

o o o

o o o, which Locobase would characterize as vertical columns ...too late now, I suppose).

The steam pipes in the smokebox (those taking the steam from the dry pipe to the valves) were to be made of copper (underlined). The cab was "iron fronted", crystal plate glass in all windows, and the double roof had a 2" (50.8 mm) air space between the layers.
