Lietuvos GelePinkeliai 4-6-2 Locomotives in Lithuania

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 1 / 399 (Locobase 1651)

Data from [link], last accessed 11 April 2010.

Originally built for Lithuania as Class Gp and began service between Berlin and Riga. LG 5 was the 1,000th locomotive built by Skoda.

After the Soviet Union occupied Lithuania, they took over the locomotives, which were seized in turn by the advancing Wehrmacht in mid-1941 and given to the Czech State Railways.

Remarkably, the entire class survived World War Two and remained with the CSD, but they proved too heavy for most Czech rail lines and their power was not exploited because of an immovable speed limit of 130 km/hr (80 mph).
