C.F.Madagascar Articulated Locomotives in Madagascar

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 35 (Locobase 4760)

Data from [link] . See also DeGolyer, Vol 63, pp. 147+. Works numbers were 44331-44334 in October 1916 and 44609-44610 in December.

A photo from Bruce Pryor's Narrow Gauge Pictures From Off The Beaten Path ([link] (1 Dec 2004)) shows a long, slender boiler with wood-burning Belpaire firebox and a tall stack topped by a basket-shaped spark arrester. The thimble-shaped steam dome is positioned just behind the leading engine set, its external steam pipes feeding the HP cylinders in the trailing engine set.

Madagascar's order included the requirement that these Mallets be able to haul a trailing load 110 tons up a 2 1/2% grade at 12 km/h (7.5 mph).

Class 61 (Locobase 15594)

Data from diagram UG Type 163, Societe Alsacienne de Construction Mecaniques from SACM locomotive book supplied by Dany Machi up at [link] as

Diagrammes des machines SACM construites a GRAFENSTADEN (October 2007). Works numbers were 7391-7398 in 1925.

These were superheated variants of the same four-axle Mallet design supplied by Baldwin and described in Locobase 4760. The design had tanks along the sides of the boiler as well as a tender.
