(Thanks to Dave Hayward for his 8 July 2024 email correcting a mistake in the rail gauge.) Nasmyth Wilson works numbers were 1567-1571 in 1929, North British works numbers were 24514-24519 in 1939, 24565-24569 in 1939-1940.

Similar in many ways to the main-line Class 56 Pacifics, these tank engines ran on branch lines with tighter curves.

According to Class C (later 40) consisted of two distinct designs of 4-6-4T. The original batch, delivered in 1929 by Nasmyth Wilson, had Caprotti valve gear and 23.6 sq ft (2.19 sq m) grate area. Two further batches, delivered 1939-40 from North British, had rotary cam poppet valve gear, a larger grate, and smoke deflectors. In appearance they were like a tank version of the Class O pacifics.

Six more were ordered for delivery in 1941 from NBLC (works numbers 24661-24666, but they were taken over by the War Department as class 2600 (2600-2605) and sent to Egypt for the Middle East Forces. There, their class ID was MEF 140-145

Although they were to be returned to the FMSR, the railway objected to the suggested cost on grounds that the locomotives had been heavily used. In 1949, the War Department sold the sextet to the Royal Jordan Hashemite Railway.
