Data from "2-8-2 Tank Locomotive, Mauritius Government Railways", Locomotive Magazine, Volume XVII [17] (15 December 1911), p. 261.
Mr A G Dykes of the MGR required Kitson & Co to supply a powerful locomotive capable of hauling 200 ton trains up a 1 in 27 grade (3.7 %) at 25 mph (40 km/h). The Leeds builder's product's six axles spread the locomotive's weight over a relatively long distance.
