Hidaldo y Noreste / Hidalgo y Nordeste / Hidalgo y Noreste 2-8-0 Locomotives in Mexico

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 113/G-016 (Locobase 11657)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines, 1888, as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University Vol 14, p. 63. Works numbers were 9867 and 9876 in March 1889.

The other locomotive in this pair was named Ocampo. This pair of Consolidations was among the largest locomotives to operate on this narrow-gauge system.

The FC Hidalgo was a system of lines that connected the town of Pachuca (50 km northeast of Mexico City) with serveral others. 58.9 km in one direction was Tizayuca, where it linked to the FC de Nordeste. Other branches from this line included Agustin to Irolo (28.3 km), Tepa a Somoriel (20.1 km), and one from Tizayuca to Teoloyucan (25.8 km).

The Hidalgo y Nordeste was acquired by the Nacional de Mexico in 1906 and these two were placed in class G-014 and renumbered 223-224. Of all the H y NE engines, only the similar Pachuca (231) lasted longer, the 223 being scrapped in November 1949, the 224 in February 1954.

Class J Villagran/G-014 (Locobase 11587)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University Vol 15, p. 31. Works numbers were 9867 and 9876 in March 1889; 12767 in October 1891; 14964-14965 in July 1896, 25773 in May 1905.

The other locomotive in this pair was named Ocampo. This pair of Consolidations was among the largest locomotives to operate on this narrow-gauge system. Acayucotlan (#13) was produced in 1891. Another pair arrived in 1896 - they bore the names Zempoala (#20) and Tezontepec (#19). Zacatlan (#27) joined the stud in 1905.

Class Pachuca (E-4)/G-015 (Locobase 11902)

Data from DeGolyer, Volume 30, p 122. See also NdeM 1926ca Locomotive Diagrams supplied in December 2010 by Allen Stanley. Works number was 12270 in October 1891.

Of interest in the original design is the wide firebox in an engine that burned either wood or coal.

A later upgrade to a 155-psi boiler included the subtraction of 20 boiler tubes from the total count. Tube heating surface area dropped to 801 sq ft (74.4 sq m) and firebox heating surface also shrank to 77.33 sq ft (7.2 sq m) which, combined, yielded an evaporative heating surface area of 878 sq ft (81.55 sq m). This smaller firebox burned oil and the tendeer was converted to hold 2,041 US gallons (7,725 litres) of fuel.

Class Xicotepc (Locobase 15931)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University Vol 16, p. 236. Works numbers were 11702-11703 in March 1889, 12267 in October.

This was the smaller of two similar Consolidation designs that operated on the Hidalgo. Only these three--Tuxpan (12) and Acayucotlan (13) being the other two in the class--

had 15 x 18" cylinders.
