Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University, Vol 78, p.425. Works number was 59204 in May 1926.
Most of the smaller Baldwin engines were manufactured to stock patterns within a few wheel arrangements. So this locomotive is distinctive. Its six-coupled. rear-truck-only with tender was unusual even for that wheel arrangement.
It was procured for the line which lay between Xai Xai and Freire de Andrade. Other sources say the line connected Villa de JoSo Belo and Chicomo and was 140 km (87 miles) long. Wherever it ran, the 3 had maximum grades of 1.85% to climb and relatively gentle curve radii of 150 metres (492 feet).
