Trans-Zambezi 4-8-0 Locomotives in Mozambique

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class Vasco da Gama (Locobase 15935)

Data from "New Locomotives for the Trans-Zambezi Railway", The Locomotive, Volume XXVIII [28] (15 February 1922), pp. 28-29. See also "100 Years of the Railway," The Eye--The Insider's Guide to Malawi archived at [link], last accessed 3 January 2015.

These Twelve-wheelers were repeats of the Shire Highlands locomotives of Nyasaland shown in Locobase 20071. The newer engines were bought to support the new railway then under construction ran parallel to the Indian Ocean from the port of Beira and crossing the Zambezi at Chinde (Chindio) into Nyasaland (the colonial name for Malawi).

They too had the Belpaire firebox, relatively small cylinder volume (for a Cape Gauge 4-8-0), and small drivers.
