Class 53 (Locobase 21271)

Data from Krupp im Dienst der Dampflokomotive (Essen, Germany: 1940), p 88. See also "Staatsmijnen in Limburg" in Wikipedia (as translated by Google) at [], last accessed 31 October 2025. Work number was 1844 in September 1938, 1944 in 1939 and 2184 in March 1940 .

These hefty eight-coupled tank locomotives hauled coal-laden trains from the state coal mines found in the South Limburg coalfield. Wikipedia lists the major mines in this complex:

Wilhelmina State Mine in Terwinselen (1906-1969)

Emma State Mine in Treebeek/Hoensbroek (1911-1973)

Hendrik State Mine in Brunssum (1915-1963)

Maurits State Mine in Lutterade-Geleen (1926-1967)

During the first few years of the Third Reich's occupation during World War II, the 53 and 56 remained near Limburg, but were then taken to Germany in 1944. Returned to Limburg in 1946, the pair were retired in 1958.
