Data from "2-8-2 Tank Locomotives for the Dutch State Railways," Locomotive Magazine, Volume 20 (15 August 1914), p. 213. LM said that Hohenzollern's 3,000th locomotive was NS 1110.
According to LM, it was the more than tenfold increase in coal traffic from the Limburg mines in the previous six years that led locomotive superintendent S E Haagsma to design this hefty Mikado tank and order 26 from Hohenzollern. The German builder delivered a thick-barrelled barrel and Belpaire firebox and short water tanks. The railway would return to the builder for 14 more.
The class also served passenger trains that scaled grades of 1in 72 (1.4%) and 1 in 62 (1.6%).
But by the early 1930s
