Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class Bc (Locobase 4968)

Data from [link] accessed in January 2002 and and from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University Volume 24, p. 122.

A Vauclain compound Mikado delivered to the WMR, this was produced in 1896 (works #19796) together with one of the compound Prairies. The advantages of a trailing axle are obvious when #17 is compared to the WMR's Consolidations. The boiler's heating surface increased by 42% while the grate area grew by 50%; the latter growth suggests that a lot of the heating surface increase was directly heated by the firebox.

This Mike was taken into the New Zealand Government Railways when the W&M was absorbed in 1908 as Class Bc, #463. Of the WMR's inheritance, however, #463 was one of the first to be withdrawn, leaving in March 1927.
