Nigeria Railways 4-8-0 Locomotives in Nigeria

Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 154 (Locobase 20922)

Data from No. 34, "Goods Engine and Tender for the Nigerian Railways", Vulcan Foundry Locomotive Catalogue found on Flicker's Historical Locomotive Images website at [], last accessed 26 June 2021. See also D[ennis] Rock Carling, 4-8-0 Tender Locomotives (New York: Drake Publishers, Inc, 1972), p. 65 and serial 273 on table XB, pp.104-105. (Many thanks to Jorge Cerezo Toledo for his 26 June 2021 email containing links to several sites including the Vulcan Catalogue referred to above.) Works numbers were 3549-3551 in 1922.

Most of the NR Twelve-wheelers filled as much of the loading gauge as possible, but this light-rail version came in smaller and lighter. A Belpaire firebox was standard as was the Walschaert outside constant-lead radial valve gear.

The trio supported construction work on the NR, joining three built by North Briitish Locomotive Company in 1914. The six engines remained in service until retired (presumably one by one) between 1936 and 1950.
