Class Details by Steve Llanso of Sweat House Media

Class 40 (Locobase 13083)

Data from Baldwin Locomotive Works Specification for Engines as digitized by the DeGolyer Library of Southern Methodist University, Volume 30, p 184. Works number was 30129 in February 1907.

The American-owned mining company worked silver and copper deposits and operated a 83-mile line from the Central of Peru's terminus at Oroya to Cerro de Pasco. Every mile of 70-lb/yard, 35-kg/metre rail was laid at altitudes of 12,000 ft or more. Two branch lines connected the main line with coal mines at Goyllarisquisga (26 miles away) and Quishuarcancha (11 miles). Maximum grade was held to 2% and grade curvature maxed out at a comparably modest 16 degrees.
