The two classes were distinguished by their tenders, the Px48 pulling one with two bogies, the Px49 using a 3-axle version. Other changes from the pre-war design included a more sheltered footplate and enlargement of the heating surfaces and the grate.
Although built to the 750 mm gauge, 17 were modified in 1969-1974 by ZNTK Nowy Its in Czechoslovakia to run on the metre gauge. And 10 went to Romania as CFR 764.050-059.
