One of a very few articulated locomotive designs in which the two sets of drivers are not equal in number. This was a straightforward Mallet tank that was supplied to the Portuguese Railways in two separate years -- 1910 and 1923.(The later set of seven were somewhat smaller; see Locobase 9993.)
Wiener (commented on the unusual mixed arrangement and added that the engines later had two-axle tenders added to them. He wasn't certain this happened, and photographs from Ziel and Eagleson (1973) suggested the little tenders were later removed. Many remained in service in the late 1960s on mixed-traffic service.

Locobase 3636 shows the earlier set of oddly arranged Mallet tanks delivered to the CFP in 1910.
This later set of additional locomotives used shorter boilers than those of the 1910 engines and rolled on slightly taller drivers. Some of the class remained in mixed-traffice service until 1981.
